Few whisky drinkers would know that the future of their spirit of choice once lied in the hands of a tiny insect from North America. In the Victorian era, whisky took a back seat to the wine and brandy that was regularly enjoyed by the wealthy. During the import of grapevines from America to Europe in 1860, however, a small insect called Phylloxera somehow survived the voyage and settled down in the vineyards of France. As they ravaged the grapevines throughout Europe and diminished the wine trade, consumers turned toward another spirit from Scotland: whisky. Through bold interference, the Phylloxera became the tiny superhero that saved the whisky industry.
This project was to create an alcohol bottle design for the packaging and branding agency Stranger & Stranger. I designed this scotch whisky based off of the story of the Phylloxera in Scotland, using a wine bottle as the vessel and having it aged in red wine barrels to represent the "replacement" of the wine industry by whisky.
