Uzumaki is a horror manga written and illustrated by Junji Ito. The series tells the story of Kurouzo-cho, a fictional city in Japan that is plagued by a supernatural curse involving spirals. As the story progresses, the citizens become more obsessed with the spiral curse and are affected by it in ways that are increasingly destructive.
This project was to design a title sequence for a film based on a book. I chose to create this title sequence for Uzumaki as if it were made into a live-action film. Using subtle movements with a parallax effect, I set the scene in a gloomy, overcast coastal town that resembles the calm before a storm. While the beginning is slow and tranquil, it becomes more and more ominous as the sequence progresses.
